Title:   Functional polymers by end quenching
Inventor:   Rudolf Faust
Summary:   The inventors have conceived of a method of synthesizing a polymer with a halogenated endcap group. The method comprises the reaction of a cationic, living polymer (for example, polyisobutylene) with a substituted conjugated diene (the endcapping reagent, typically a haloallyl) in a solvent. The solvent causes termination by halogenation, and is from 10 to over 1000 times faster than the addition of molecules of the conjugated diene. A more reactive, halogenated, functional end group is the result.
