Title:   Metal oxide coated nanometer-scale structures
Inventor:   Jayant Kumar
Summary:   This invention is a method for producing metal-oxide coated fibers and particles. Metal oxide coatings are of interest due to their chemical and electrical properties. Tin oxide is used in photovoltaic cells, liquid crystal displays, and light emitting diodes. Titanium dioxide is a wide band-gap semiconductor, and is also a good oxidizing agent for photo-excited molecules and is thus used as a photocatalyst, as a sensor, and as an electrode material for dye-based photovoltaic cells. Unfunctionalized base fibers are created by electrospinning, extrusion melt spinning, or by phase separated synthesis. Their functionality, based on the core fiber’s chemistry, is converted to an acid or a carboxylate group, which is then reacted with a reactive metal intermediate such as a metal hydroxide.
