Title:   Method to Prepare Block Copolymers by the Combination of Cationic and Anionic Polymerization
Inventor:   Rudolf Faust
Summary:   The researchers have discovered a method to use the combination of anionic and cationic polymerization techniques to prepare block copolymers. Specifically, block copolymers comprised of polyisoolefins and polyacrylates via a coupling reaction are disclosed. According to this invention, bromoallyl functional polyisobutylene, a new composition of matter, is prepared by the halogen exchange reaction of a chloroallyl functionalized polyisobutylene with LiBr. While the chloroallyl functionality is unreactive, the bromoallyl functionality readily and efficiently reacts with living anionic polymers. By this method, block copolymers can be prepared via the combination of living cationic and living anionic polymerization. Also, diblock copolymers, triblock copolymers or radial-shaped block copolymers can be prepared using monofunctional, difunctional or multifunctional polymers.
